The size and shape of the tail fin can affect the cruising, speed, stability and steering of the paddleboard, and boarders who play paddle board a lot may feel these nuances noticeably, and trying to fine-tune the paddle board by changing the tail fin may make your paddleboard perform differently. Among them, the following points are what you need to pay attention to:
First, the shape of the tail rudder
There are many different shapes of caudal fins on the market, but there are generally three:
1. Swept back The swept back
The advantage is that the swept fin makes it easier to draw a straight line by shifting the center of gravity of the fin backwards, and because this tail fin has a large surface area, it also makes the lateral stability of the paddle board better, belonging to the long-distance fin.
The downside is that it will be very painful if the oarsman wants to turn quickly, and it will not be the fastest tail fin due to the large enough size and more resistance.
Suitable type: long-haul cruise/drag racing board
2. Upright
The upright caudal fin is the opposite of the swept fin caudal fin, in which most of its area remains above the caudal fin. Due to the smaller area, it will create less resistance and will be faster in the water.
The advantage is that the shape of this tail fin is more suitable for oarsmen who want to row and turn quickly.
The disadvantage is that it is not suitable for walking in a straight line.
Applicable type: racing board
3. The general all-round fin
This is the most common type of tail fin, probably used on 80% of paddle boards. It blends sweeping and upright with each other, providing the best choice of both types of fins, which can be regarded as all-round fins.
The advantage is that the tailfin shape is suitable for use in surfing and calm water in general, especially for beginners.
The downside is that it is not suitable for more performance expert racing paddle boards.
Suitable type: All-round paddle boards from cruising to surfing are available.
