Is World Book Day March 3 or April 23?

Have you ever been lost in a book, talking to the characters in the book, and your eyes gradually lead to a wider world. You go on a mythical mission to save the world, fight side by side with doctors to fight the epidemic, and run in the fields with children. Many times, when you finish reading, you will be closer to your true self.
On April 23, the world became a sea of books, and there were too many pages of books. Turning over a page in a history book, perhaps the life of a historical figure has ended; turning over a page in a mythology book, evil has finally been defeated, and our yearning for beauty is vividly expressed at this moment; turning over a page in a philosophy book, the shining wisdom of mankind is at this moment Dazzling than the stars; turning over a mathematics book, this beautiful and harmonious subject has taken another step forward.

The origin of World Book Day

One of the oldest sources of World Book Day is a legend in Catalonia, Spain: a beautiful princess was trapped in the mountains by a dragon. The warrior George defeated the dragon alone and rescued the princess; the princess gave George a book as a gift in return. Book. Since then, the book has become a symbol of courage and strength. On April 23, 303 AD, St. George was martyred for trying to stop the Roman emperor's persecution of Christians. April 23 became "St. George's Day". During the festival, residents in Catalonia have the custom of giving roses and books to relatives and friends.
Another, more familiar origin is that in 1922, Vicente Clavier Andrés, an enthusiastic publisher from Barcelona, Spain, proposed celebrating a day dedicated to books to honor the famous novelist Miguel de Cervantes.

Miguel de Cervantes

The first celebration occurred on October 7, 1926, coinciding with Cervantes' birthday. However, to commemorate the deaths of several literary giants, including Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, UNESCO decided to mark April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995.

William Shakespeare

(In a historical coincidence, Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same date - 23 April 1616 - but not on the same day, as at the time, Spain used the Gregorian calendar and England used the Julian calendar; Shakespeare actually died 10 days after Cervantes died, on 3 May of the Gregorian calendar).

World  Book Day in the UK and Ireland in March

In the UK in 1998, due to the conflict between World Book Day and St. George's Day and Easter school holidays, the UK changed this day to March to hold World Book Day, and Ireland also held it in March. Generally speaking, it is held on the first Thursday in March every year, but on the evening of April 23, the British charity organization "The Reading Agency" will also hold "World Book Night". Stratford, Shakespeare's hometown, also hosts a world-famous theater festival.

Recommend a Book

Albert Camus

If I were asked to recommend a book, I would not have chosen a definite book a long time ago. I always felt that there would be a book that would surpass the books I had read before. I first read Camus's book, The Stranger, 5 years ago, and it hooked me right away. The first words that are so ordinary yet hit the heart all of a sudden

"Aujourd'hui, maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier, je ne sais pas"

The first sentence went straight to the topic, it was short and concise, without any fancy language, but I was deeply involved in it. It took me more than an hour to read it, and then read it twice, so I think this is a book worth recommending. There are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand readers. What I saw in the book is a man who speaks few words and is real. Respecting birth, old age, illness and death is not ruthlessness, but hypocritical concern is the real indifference.
